Designing A Special Pedigree

VICTORIAN Brian Parkinson admits he celebrated Jury's Group 1 Winter Cup victory like he'd won the race.

VICTORIAN Brian Parkinson admits he celebrated Jury's Group 1 Winter Cup victory at Albion Park last Thursday night almost like he'd won the race.

Parkinson, as a director of The Meadows, was in Brisbane town for the rich Group 1 final and was in a celebratory mood after Jury led throughout for his second Group 1 victory, to add to his National Sprint, and third Group win to add to his Lismore Gold Cup success.

Jury, you see, is a son of Brian Parkinson's former star race dog and much underrated stud dog, Cosmic Chief.

Brian was understandably proud.

Cosmic Chief, winner of the Sandown Shootout, Warrnambool Classic, Bert Bryant and runner-up in the National Sprint, produced Jury from a mating to Steve Williams' bitch Velocity Sheba (College Causeway-Velocity Zoom).

Velocity Zoom was a litter sister to dual Group 1 Winter Cup winner Glen Gallon, another Williams' bred.

Parkinson's pride comes from the fact Cosmic Chief has proven himself at stud.

“Father time moves on and new, young sires come along and take over,” said Brian.

“I still have about 50 vials of semen for Cosmic Chief dotted around the country. I get a few people ring me from time to time wanting to use him.
“Last spring I sold six and next spring I'm planning on having a bit of a sale at $600 to sell some more.”

Brian says the Cosmic Chief offspring fast became noted for one of the really great aspects of his influence … chase.

“Most people who went to him were happy with what they got,” said Brian.

“And all those who used him commented on the chase they got. It showed in the number of breeders who came back to use him again.”

Cosmic Chief's stud career could have done with a Jury a good few years ago.

“Like everything,” said Brian. “It's a catch 22. If the Group stars come along, the more and more broodbitches come along.”

Cosmic Chief did well siring the Group 1 winning bitch Cosmic Wise (26 wins, $231,000) and the classy Ride The Rails (27 wins, $167,000).

Others like Uno Suzie, Chief Jetpilot, Tuggeragh, Saltador, Tiggeralong Amigo all became better than handy performers.

His progeny have earned $9 million in stakes and they run at a starter to winner percentage of a very good 13 percent.

Already Cosmic Chief's daughters are producing.

That classy Walk Hard litter that includes Group performers Oronsay and Angel Dash, the multiple Queensland Group performer Hara's Honey, and classy Tassie bitch Silent Boloney are from daughters of Cosmic Chief.

“He probably has 120 litters on the ground,” said Brian Parkinson. “And I always got a good response from those who used him.”

Steve Williams has always been one to look outside the commercial square and Cosmic Chief.

The pedigree he put together to produce Jury was already proven to a degree.

His bitch Velocity Sheba brings in a cross of Bombastic Shiraz in her damline and to Cosmic Chief's dam he had produced a better than handy litter.

There is no doubt Cosmic Chief has lifted the pedigree.

Jury's mum Velocity Sheba won two races, at Cannington and Mandurah. Her mother Velocity Zoom won one race at Maitland.

While most breeders would shy away from using either of these bitches, Steve Williams has always been happy to give a chance to those bitches whose families have served him best.

He put Velocity Zoom to College Causeway and got Velocity Sapphire (9 wins, 21 placings).

Her sister Velocity Sheba could gallop, Steve has told me that often. To Cosmic Chief she is the dam of Jury.

Velocity Zoom's litter sister, Velocity Zip, had produced Inequity (16 wins, 12 placings, $49,000) to Dashing Corsair and Chilled Heat (12 wins, 22 placings, $38,000) to Magic Sprite.

Velocity Zap, an unraced sister to Glen Gallon, went to Dyna Tron to produce Parchment (11 wins, 17 placings, $36,000) a Group finalist.

Glen Gallon, of course, was a champion, starting 71 times for 37 wins and 15 placings earning Williams $619,000. He won the Winter Cup in 2012 and 2013.
Steve Williams has already indicated he will give Jury a chance at stud and has already mapped out a couple of matings for him from the other damlines that have served him so well.

Brian Parkinson was justifiably proud of Cosmic Chief.

As he said, no one, not even Steve Williams, cheered harder for Jury at Albion Park last Thursday night.
