A career ending rugby league injury was the catalyst for hobby trainer Troy Butler to make the switch from owner to trainer a few years ago.

The Hunter-based trainer ventures down the Hume Highway on Saturday with his classy homebred That's Lil Harry.

Butler, 35, was playing in the local Newcastle comp when his career came to a premature end.

"I was forced into retirement after one too many head knocks," Butler said.

"They told me to find something else to do."

After owning greyhounds, including the highly talented That's Lil Vicki, the dam of That's Lil Harry, Butler decided to take up the collar and lead a few years back.

"It's just a little hobby and has its ups and downs but it's something we can do as a family," he said.

"I'm lucky I've got a supportive wife Belinda who helps out and the kids enjoy the dogs as well.

"We're having a great time."

Butler was taught the ropes by That's Lil Vicki's trainer Dave Irwin and the late Gerry Lee who passed away in 2020.

After six consecutive starts in box eight, That's Lil Harry jumps from box four on Saturday night in the Ladbrokes Sports Bar Stakes over the 520m trip.

The son of Fernando Bale will be chasing his 11th win at start 26 and his second at headquarters from six starts.

"It's good to see him away from the pink," Butler said.

"The dog is great, I'm just hoping he can get to the first turn first so we can see what he can do up the back.

"We haven't seen him on the bunny at Wentworth Park since a race he won back in July.

"I think it's a suitable race and there doesn't appear to be too much speed drawn underneath him.

"I'd say it's going to all come down to him jumping. If he gets the start right and can lead, I think he's a genuine chance."
