THE 35th running of the Devonport Breeders Classic is in full swing, with 16 non-tab qualifying heats staged at the North West Coast circuit last Saturday, and it was quality youngster Buckle Up Axon who recorded the fastest qualifier with a sizzling 25.48 performance.

Leith-based trainer Gary Johnson puts the polish on the Buckle Up Wes x America Bale chaser, who led easily throughout to score by 5 ¾ lengths from Rip The Bandaid and Hello Lenny in third.

Bred by Gary’s wife and owner Robyn Johnson, the blue 32-kilogram sprinter has won four of 10 races in Tasmania, with two wins from two starts at Devonport over 452 metres with a personal best time of 25.73 back in July.

The Johnson team will have a strong hand in this year’s series, qualifying five more runners of the Buckle Up Wes x America Bale litter, including the likes of Buckle Up Kiona, Buckle Up Rhonan, Buckle Up Azona, Buckle Up Izy and Buckle Up Ardia.

Five pups of the Fernando Bale x Jamila Flex litter successfully qualified as well, giving Robyn and Gary a staggering eleven runners in next Tuesday afternoon’s semi-finals.
