The Phoenix Is Back In 2023

The Melbourne Greyhound Racing Association (MGRA) has announced that The Phoenix is set to he run again in 2023, at The Meadows on December 16.

The Phoenix is the world's richest greyhound race and this year it will carry the same purse as it did in 2022 – $1.65 million, with a winner's purse of $1 million.

This year will be the third running of Australia's first greyhound slot race, modelled of US thoroughbred race the Pegasus World Cup and Australia's richest thoroughbred race, the $20 million The Everest.

Applications open for the eight slots on July 24 and they close on September 1. The slots will be sold for $100,000.

Former Premier of Victoria Dr Denis Napthine will again lead the Independent Assessment Panel (IAP) that is tasked with the responsibility of selecting the eight slot holders.

The eight successful slot holders will be announced on September 8.

"The 2022 edition of The Phoenix saw unprecedented media coverage and awareness of greyhound racing with Wow She's Fast going back-to-back to elevate her as the highest prizemoney earning greyhound of all time," Melbourne Greyhounds CEO Scott Wuchatsch said.

"The Meadows is renowned for elite racing, hosting events of the calibre of the Australian Cup, Topgun and Maturity Classic throughout the year but The Phoenix has in a short period established itself as one of the most sought after and exciting events in the country."
