Applications Open For Inaugural ‘The Phoenix'

APPLICATIONS for a slot in the inaugural The Phoenix open on Wednesday as the build up towards the $1.1 million event begins to intensify.

Successful slot holders will be asked to pony up $75,000 for a place in the $750,000-to-the-winner invitation which will take place at The Meadows on Saturday night, December 18.

In announcing the key dates of the showpiece race, Melbourne Greyhound Racing Association (MGRA) boss Ashley Baker said the event has already generated huge interest and discussion.

"This is unlike anything we have ever done before and is a concept we intend to replicate for years to come," Baker said.

"So from the outset it was vital that we made sure all participants would be protected by clear and binding guidelines.

"We have already been overwhelmed with interest from trainers, owners, small and big businesses, who all want to purchase a slot and it is important that everyone who participates has a positive experience."

Applications for the eight slots will close on August 8 with the tender process to be overseen by former Victorian Premier Dr. Denis Napthine.

"I am thrilled to have been asked to be involved in determining the slot holders for the inaugural edition of The Phoenix at The Meadows," Dr. Napthine said.

"It's an exciting concept which we have seen work tremendously well in the thoroughbred industry and I believe the race will provide some excellent promotional opportunities for the sport of greyhound racing in Victoria.

"We will be looking for innovative applications that show a commitment to upholding the integrity of the race and to providing promotion of this exciting event.

"I very much look forward to analysing the slot applications and furthermore cannot wait to be on course come December 18 to witness the concept come to life."

WHY THE PHOENIX IS A GAME-CHANGER

Winning applicants will be announced in early September with the final field to be determined on December 10 with the box draw to follow 48 hours later.

Early all-in betting for The Phoenix has Aston Rupee the $5.50 favourite just ahead of his brother Aston Fastnet at $6.50.
