Aston Dee Bee Making His Mark At Stud

DAVID Brasch delves into the outstanding stud credentials of Aston Dee Bee, the Melbourne Cup winning champ getting plenty of attention from breeders.

IN an era dominated by Paul Wheeler-bred stars Barcia Bale and Fernando Bale, brood-bitch owners have quickly become aware they need alternatives to these two great sires.

And since his retirement 12 months ago, superstar sprinter Aston Dee Bee has been one of those greatly sought after alternatives.

So much so that he has 90 litters already whelped and earning rave reviews from those who have bred to him.

Yes, Aston Dee Bee is a son of Barcia Bale but the fact he has such a wonderful dam-line ready and waiting to link up with numerous brood bitch lines means he is a future stud dog great.

His dam is Aston Elle was a Group 1 place-getter and royally bred by Bombastic Shiraz from the group 1 winning and track record breaking Elite Oriental … the direct damline of Awesome Assassin.

Aston Ell raced 37 times for 12 wins and 12 placings earning $54,000.

Aston Dee Bee took his record to 65 starts for 35 wins and 16 placings earning $809,000.

The Group 1 Melbourne Cup was his standout victory but the fact he made 14 Group finals, five of them at the highest level, plus he broke a couple of track records, means he was in an elite group as a race dog.

And, like his father Barcia Bale, he is 36kgs, able to stamp size into much of his progeny.

Aston Dee Bee's acceptance by brood bitch owners is shown in just a handful of those who have already whelped to him, some of the really elite race bitches of the past few years.

They include champion Sweet It Is and others like Bells Are Ringin', Fabregal, Zipping Summah, Bizarre Barbie and Brughelino.

No one could find fault with Aston Dee Bee's potential stud career. Every aspect of his pedigree, conformation, race career … you name it, he lives up to what is expected.

Two of his litter sisters were Group finalists.

And, we need to go back five generations before we find the name of any import in his pedigree … Farloe Melody, Grove Whisper and Fortified Speed.

With Bombastic Shiraz as his damsire, he has a dominant female line able to be matched to numerous bloodlines.

And Elite Oriental, as his granddam, is ideal as well.

Her litter brother Knocka Norris, sold prematurely to China as a young dog, has since proven himself a dominant force at stud.

His daughters are also proving themselves, as Poke The Bear and his brother Out Of Range, have proven.

Aston Dee Bee has so many options at stud it is crazy … Fernando Bale bitches are an absolute MUST for him.

But bitches with Where's Pedro, Brett Lee through females, Bombastic Shiraz through sons, while Token Prince is also a MUST to be included in the

pedigree of the bitches to be mated by Aston Dee Bee, and so is Solve The Puzzle.

Any breeder worth his salt would have already noticed the pedigree of Poke The Bear and his brother Out Of Range, Group 1 stars from a fabulous mating.

One of the two dominant forces in their pedigree is the link between Goddess Of Fire and her brother Awesome Assassin (in the damline of Fernando Bale).

Which means this cross can be replicated (in reverse) by putting daughters of Fernando Bale to Aston Dee Bee.

And, we have already seen that Fernando has sired G1 Australian Cup winner Hecton Bale to a bitch called Searle Bale (Dyna Lachlan-Princess Bale). Searle Bale is a genetic sister to Barcia Bale.

The simple fact we have to go back five generations before we get to an import in the pedigree of Aston Dee Bee means bitches with any import in their pedigree should suit him.

The saturation of the famed sisters Zulu Moss and Riviera Moss in his dam means daughters of Magic Sprite, Oaks Road and Talks Cheap will suit him as well.

The Wheeler influence in his sire will allow all manner of line breeding to Wheeler's line.

The touch of Fortress via his son Fortified Speed in Aston Dee Bee's direct damline will allow special matings to be produced via bitches with Velocette, Slater, David Bale and Kinloch Brae in their pedigree.

Daughters of Brett Lee should suit him.

Ima Geisha Girl is a full sister to Aston Dee Bee's dam Aston Elle but from a repeat mating.

Ima Geisha Girl was a real race star. Mated to Brett Lee she produced Pop The Cork, a flying machine. No one ever saw the very best of Pop The Cork.

Aston Dee Bee has always been a fast, super fast, race dog. He's taken his time to harness that pace and turn it into Group 1 glory. This can be the Bombastic Shiraz influence. His progeny were mostly the same.

If Aston Dee Bee was a thoroughbred, he would have been retired immediately after his Group 1 victory and broodmare owners would be lining up to pay his $100,000 service fee.

At $2200, he is an absolute bargain.
