Azzopardi's Titanic Casino Cup Victory

REGALLY bred sprinter Aston Titan has landed the biggest win of his career with a thrilling victory in Thursday afternoon’s Group 3 Casino Cup.

REGALLY bred sprinter Aston Titan has landed the biggest win of his career with a thrilling victory in Thursday afternoon's Group 3 Casino Cup (484m).

In a pulsating finale to the $25,000-to-the-winner feature, Aston Titan, a son of champion sire Fernando Bale, downed rank outsider Proficiency to claim the feature in 27.63.

Aston Titan was prepared for his Casino Cup assault by Bob Cooke who landed the recent Group 2 Lismore Cup with Cash View.

Cooke was sent the prolific winning chaser by champion Victorian trainer Anthony Azzopardi with the decision to target the race paying off in the best way possible.

After the race a jubilant Azzopardi, who was trackside to watch the race, was full of praise for the ultra-talented and consistent Aston Titan.

"What a great result," Azzopardi said.

"I had eyed this race off for a while now because I thought he'd be suited at Casino and we got the result. It's great when things fall into place.

"And a big thanks to Cookie (Bob Cooke), he looks after the dogs I send up here fantastic. You couldn't ask for more."

Following last week's stunning 27.07 heat victory, many expected race favourite Louis Rumble to be too strong in the final.

But after a moderate beginning he was always in trouble, opening the race up for his rivals.

Down the back straight it was a race in four with Proficiency, Mitchell Road, Aston Titan and Louis Rumble all in the mix.

But it was Aston Titan which eventually gained the ascendancy, arriving just in time to score win 20 of his 48 start career.

The Casino Cup success could kickstart a big 24 hours for owner Ray Borda who boasts Aston Lee in the Group 3 Devonport Chase on Friday afternoon before his superstar Aston Rupee steps out in the Group 1 TAB Melbourne Cup later on in the evening.
