Bendigo Cup On The Cards For Paua Of Buddy

STEVE White has earmarked next month’s Group 2 Bendigo Cup for Paua Of Buddy after the son of Aston Dee Bee broke the Warragul record on Tuesday.

TRAINER Steve White has earmarked next month's Group 2 Bendigo Cup for Paua Of Buddy after the son of Aston Dee Bee smashed the Warragul track record on Tuesday night.

Stepping out for the first time since July after being scratched from the Group 3 Warragul St. Leger Final, Paua Of Buddy recorded a blinding 22.00 for the 400 metre journey to extend his record to six wins and two seconds from nine starts.

The crushing performance lowered the previous 22.07 time-standard shared by Aston Bolero and Paua Of Oscar, an older half-brother of Paua Of Buddy.

"When I saw him charge through the circle like he did I was pretty confident he'd break the record," trainer Steve White said.

"He'd only had two runs up the straight going into last night with the most recent an 18.80 go up Healesville last week so I knew he was flying.

"Before he started racing he trialled 22.12 and 22.11 at Warragul and last night was perfect for racing so if things went to plan there was always a good chance he'd break the record. And he did.”

In late July, White elected to scratch Paua Of Buddy from the Warragul St. Leger Final after finishing a courageous second in his heat behind dual Group 1 winner Qwara Bale.

"He took about four lengths off her in the run home and it took the stuffing out of him for a bit there," White said.

"So I pulled him out and gave him time to recover and he's come back fantastic. When they chase as hard as he does you need to protect him from himself. Paua Of Oscar is the same.

"I'm not looking too far ahead but the Bendigo Cup looks a nice option next month. After that we'll just see where we are at but he has slipped fast at Sandown and The Meadows.

"His slips at Sandown are Simon Told Helen times."

White heaped significant praise on Paua Of Buddy's dam Paua To Admit after Tuesday night's record breaking run.

"Her first two litters have thrown track record breakers and we're really excited with how her 14 month old litter to Sennachie are shaping up," White said.

"There's plenty to look forward to but with Paua Of Buddy I won't be rushing him along.

"He's a very fast dog but he's still not the finished product yet. Not by a long way."
