Brett's Last Minute Egg ‘Crack'

TRAINER Tony Brett is hoping his last minute decision to tackle this year’s Group 1 Golden Easter Egg, which gets underway at Wentworth Park this Saturday night, proves to be a masterstroke.

CHAMPION Queensland trainer Tony Brett is hoping his last minute decision to tackle this year's Group 1 Golden Easter Egg series, which gets underway at Wentworth Park this Saturday night, proves to be a masterstroke.

With 2019 marking 15 years since Brett guided home his Hall of fame chaser Bogie Leigh to Golden Easter Egg glory, the Queensland mentor goes into Saturday night's heats cautiously optimistic about his prospects.

"I only fully decided on heading to Sydney after the three dogs won so well at Albion Park last Thursday," explained Brett.

"I thought Charming Chaos would be my main hope but he's a reserve. Regal Recall and She's A Sort go into the series in career best form, they deserve their chance at the race, even without a trial at Wenty."

On a red letter night for Brett at Albion Park last Thursday, Charming Chaos scored over the 520m in a sizzling 29.77, while recent Ipswich 431m track record breaker Regal Recall posted 29.95.

Rounding out Brett's winning treble was the speedy She's A Sort in 30.10, a performance that booked her ticket to Sydney for the three-week series, which culminates with the $250,000 to-the-winner finale on Easter Saturday.

"I was really pleased with her," added Brett, the daughter of Fernando Bale lining up in heat nine on Saturday from box seven.

"She had a season at the start of the year and has returned from that a completely different dog.

"Early on she wasn't very courageous but now she's racing with far more confidence. She almost broke the first split record at Albion Park two starts back but last Thursday she hit her head on the boxes and still managed to win – I said to myself after that she deserved a shot at the Egg."

Brett's night kicks off in the opening heat on Saturday when Regal Recall, winner at 14 of his 31 starts, makes his Sydney debut from box three.

"He's just in a great place at the moment, he's a very fast dog in a purple patch of form," added Brett.

"He's struck one of the harder heats so I'm not overly confident but he does prefer Ipswich to Albion Park and I've found over time that dogs that rather Ipswich generally go better at Wentworth Park.

"It was a shame not to get a run with Charming Chaos. I'll look at the Ultra Sense for him now. He's come back from six months off with a broken hock and there's plenty of upside to him. He's got a bright future if he stays sound."
