Brook Eyeing More Bundy Cup Glory

Gin Gin trainer Ron Brook’s greyhounds are always contenders come Bundaberg Cup time with the feature event scheduled to be run Monday.

Gin Gin trainer Ron Brook's greyhounds are always contenders come Bundaberg Cup time.

The veteran trainer has tasted success in the race with Crazy Bob and in Kiewa Rebel thinks he has the dog to deliver him a second cup in Monday's 550 metre final.

"Experience is a big advantage for him, he's been around the track all but a few of his 52 starts and knows how to take all the shortcuts home," Brook said.

"As a young dog he didn't have great box speed, so he would always drop back and have to make up ground on the rail. But he's come a long way since then."

FIELDS AND FORM HERE

Kiewa Rebel was the quickest dog to come out of Monday's three heats, driving hard from box two to find the fence early before surging away mid-race to score in 31.60.

However, the son of Kinloch Brae has drawn awkwardly in box eight for Monday's $17,500 to-the-winner final.

"Fernando Tears is a very good up and coming dog for Phil Carter," Brook said of the 31.75 heat winner.

"Dolcetto Hayze who gets a start as a reserve can race well from any box, Purdi Villa will get off at the corners and David Plummer's dog Richmer Attack is just finding her feet over the distance.

"It's one of those races where you could go from favourite to a 10/1 chance depending on the box draw."

Brook says he takes a lot of pride in his Bundaberg Cup record, regularly turning out challengers with 2020 to be no different.

"I've had ten runners in Bundaberg Cup Finals over the years and finally cracked it a couple of years ago with a dog called Crazy Bob," Brook said.

"We backed him up the next year looking to be the first dog to win two in a row and he only got beaten half a head.

"I think overall we've won it once, had three seconds and a couple of thirds.

It's a race we really cherish and to win it with this dog would be something else."
