Cawbourne To Create Magic In Newcastle Cup

Owner/breeder Stuart Dickinson has reared more than his share of greyhounds but right now he’s on the ride of his life with Cawbourne Magic.

Owner/breeder Stuart Dickinson has reared more than his share of greyhounds on his Cawdor property but right now he's on the ride of his life with Cawbourne Magic.

The striking white and black son of Fernando Bale is a third-generation greyhound bred and raised at Dickinson's private establishment and the dog's owner/breeder said from an early day he stood out from the crowd.

"We breed a few dogs on the property but he was a great type," Dickinson said.

FIELDS AND FORM THE GARDENS FRIDAY

"He had a real presence about him.

"Just one of those dogs that stand out in a crowd."

On Friday night Cawbourne Magic will attempt to add to his already impressive record of 15 wins from 38 starts with career earnings of more that $170,000 in the $25,000-to-the-winner Ladbrokes Newcastle Cup Final (715m) at The Gardens.

The fastest heat winner, Cawbourne Magic stopped the clock at 41.60, slightly outside his 41.43 personal best at the track, set during a Greyhound Racing NSW Stayers Series back in May.

Cawbourne Magic isn't yet 2-1/2-years-old but he's challenging for the title of Australia's number one stayer and victory from box 6 on Friday night adds further weight to the argument.

"It's quite scary what he's achieved when you consider how young he is," Dickinson said.

"I've had my share of good dogs. Dogs like Cawbourne Frank, (Cawbourne) Whip, (Cawbourne) Looney and (Cawbourne) Marty – but this dog is already above them.

"He's such a good chaser.

"James McDonald couldn't steer this dog any better. The way he handles himself when making his way through a field is as good as I've seen.

"He's just a natural. The type of dog that everyone wants."

Cawbourne Magic is one of two finalists for the all-conquering Andy and Jody Lord kennel who have been working with the Dickinson family for more than two decades.

"I've had an association with Stuart (Dickinson) and the family for more than 20 years – just a wonderful family and great supporters of greyhound racing," Andy Lord told the Greyhound Recorder last month.

"They are people that do a lot for others and ask for nothing in return so to win any race for them means a lot to the kennel and Cawbourne Magic is just now hitting his straps."

Wagering operator BetR has Cawbourne Magic listed as the $2.30 favourite for the Newcastle Cup ahead of Bold Trease winner Stager Out Lee at $3.30 and Silver Luck, Cawbourne Magic's kennel mate, at $4.80.
