Crazy Cool Sets Golden Sands Pace

TRAINER Robert Jacobsen gets a double barrel chance to claim the Group 2 Golden Sands Final (600m) at Albion Park this Thursday night.

ROBERT Jacobsen gets a double barrel chance to claim the Group 2 Golden Sands Final (600m) at Albion Park on Thursday night.

Moorooka-based Jacobsen will take Crazy Cool and Rowdy Roddy into the final drawn boxes one and three respectively.

And, it comes a year after he finished third with It's A Trick behind Velocity Bettina in the then Group 3 Golden Sands.

Crazy Cool (Barcia Bale-Crazy Sexy), bought after one third placing at Bendigo in June last year and with no expectations of running even 500m, goes into the 600m final off the fastest heat time of 34.62.

“No, I was not expecting that,” said Jacobsen. “I thought she could lead but the final 50 metres would find her out.”

Jacobsen bought her “for good money” as a future broodbitch potential but not expecting her to run distance.

“I wanted to buy her because she is from a very good family (the Fancy damline), and her brother Canya Cruise ran a track record over the shorts at Albion Park,” he said. “She came out of the Kel Greenough kennel.

“I would have been happy even if she could not run 500 metres. I bought her as a broodbitch.

“It was originally my plan to give her a dozen starts and then put her to stud.”

But Crazy Cool has continued to improve and distance is now her forte.

She led and was run down on the line when second to Pump It in the recent Group 2 Queensland Futurity.

Kennelmate Rowdy Roddy (Jagger Swagger-Midnight Cuddle) was tossed into the Golden Sands series after having won just two races, a maiden over 395m and a 520m Novice at Albion Park in September and October.

“He ran just a couple of lengths off the track record running 22.42 in his maiden and that came after only one trial over the distance,” said Jacobsen.

“He is very strong and he too continues to improve.”

Of the dangers, Jacobsen believes Burnt Ends from the Jeff Ahern kennel is the one to beat.

“He's got the four box and I'm hoping Crazy Cool can lead and Rowdy Roddy can hold Burnt Ends out early,” he said. “Burnt Ends is a very, very good dog.”

Rowdy Roddy chased home Victorian Run Like Jess in 34.64 in their heat, while Burnt Ends won in 34.64 beating Marseille by five lengths.

The other heat went to Victorian Mepunga Isla in 35.05 beating Aristocratic Gal.

$40,000 awaits Thursday night's winning connections.
