Double Gee Blitzes Casino Record

EIGHTEEN-year-old Kaine Zammit had the day off work last Friday and decided to head down the long trek from his home in the Gold Coast hinterland to Casino.

Kaine went with his dad, Group 1 winning trainer Mick Zammit.
Mick and his wife Selena are now demanding Kaine go racing with them whenever possible.
Last Friday, the Zammit-trained Double Gee (Dyna Double One-Hot Spur) “flogged” a Mixed Grade over 620m at Casino by 20 lengths.
And in the process he smashed the track record running 35.44.
“I've told Kaine he is our lucky charm,” said Mick. “But, he's pretty laid back about his instant influence on the kennel.”
Kaine has been around greyhound racing from the moment of his birth so it's nothing new for him to tag along to the races with his parents. But Casino trips with his dad are generally out of the ordinary.
“If he wants a roof over his head, and something to eat daily, he will keep up the lucky charm duties,” joked Mick.
Of Double Gee, Zammit admits the track record was a surprise but not the ease of his victory.
Double Gee started $1.20 favourite and downed Glen Northfield-trained Rosemount Buddy with Steve Keep's Kembla De Kahn in third.
“He's always showed us a great deal of ability,” said Mick of Double Gee. “But we do like to mix up his tracks from time to time.
“We've had a great deal of success by bringing dogs to Casino for a race in between an Albion Park campaign.”
Double Gee has won three races from 12 starts for breeder Gary Dearlove who raced the dam Hot Spur with great success. She has been a prolific producer of Group performers.
Rival trainer Steve Keep was at his jovial best on the day.
“Keepie reckoned as the race was being run and Double Gee was racing further and further ahead that if he and I took off hard enough we might have run second and third in the race,” said Mick Zammit.
“I look at Keepie's girth and said he might have to settle for fourth at best.”
