Double Gee's Grand Origin Success

DOUBLE Gee has emerged as one of the top young stayers in the land.

DOUBLE Gee has emerged as one of the top young stayers in the land and trainers Selena and Mick Zammit are amazed at his progress.

Double Gee (Dyna Double One-Hot Spur) added to his recent Casino 620m track record and the Chairman's Cup victory the previous week with victory in the State Of Origin distance race at Albion Park last Thursday night.

He ran a fast 41.62 to beat Sherbini and Jalapeno as the $3.30 favourite. It took his record to 15 starts for six wins and $53,000 in stakes.

“He's probably the best stayer we've ever had in our kennel,” said Mick.

“We've had a lot of handy ones but never this good, running these sort of times.”

The Zammits admit the dog has been “thrown in the deep end” in his debut staying campaign.

“These races were coming up and we decided to toss him in without putting him through a campaign through the lower grades,” said Mick.

“It has been a big effort for him to do what he has done.”

Double Gee will be given an easy time for a week or so with the up-coming National Distance series coming up fast.

Zammit expected his dog to go very close to winning.

“He had everything in his favour in the race and the inside box draw was right up his alley,” he said. “He also lost a bit of momentum over near the 600 metre boxes when making his run. It was a very good effort.”

Zammit and his son Kaine were guests of Racing Queensland at the Origin third game the previous night and enjoyed the pre-race festivities.

“And it was a great thrill for me to see my brother George at the dogs on Thursday night,” said Mick. “He rarely goes racing these days. I will probably have to get him back into a few dogs.”
