Fab Five! The Pups That Are Racing Royalty

WHILE he may just appear appear your run-of-the-mill five month old fawn pup, it just so happens he and his siblings are the best bred pups in the land.

JAN Wheeler admits she has not had much luck picking the best pup from litters in the past, but this time she is adamant that a fawn dog pup is something special.

The pup is by Barcia Bale from Jan's “princess”, the world's highest stakes earning greyhound Fanta Bale.

The litter is five months of age.

“He is a magnificent pup and has really taken my eye,” said Jan.

Fanta Bale whelped her second litter, to Barcia Bale, four dogs and a bitch in January.

Her first litter, by Dyna Villa, is 13 months old today and still in the rearing paddocks.

“We normally bring them up to the kennels for education at about 14 months of age, but with the lockdown of states we are a bit behind with everything here,” said Jan.

“We haven't been able to get educated dogs to the trainers, haven't been able to get bitches to vets for insemination. It's put us behind with everything.”

Wheeler kennels made a decision to cut back breeding some time ago from the usual 300 to 350 each year right back to 150, but Jan says son Brendan is keen to increase numbers again.

“We've also had a few litters with small numbers which has set us back a bit as well,” she said.

A number of bitches have recently been mated, utilising Wheeler-bred sires Fernando Bale, Barcia Bale, Orson Allen, David Bale etc, but Jan says the kennel has sent bitches to Feral Franky and US star RT's Bo Jangles.

Champion Fanta Bale retired the winner of 42 races and $1.36 million in stakes with nine Group 1 victories.

“She's a great mother,” says Jan.

“But eventually she gets very tired of the pups and wants out of there.

“She looks up at you as if to say ‘I'm the princess here, not these pups'.”
