David Brasch previews one of the feature lots in this year’s Auction, superbly bred pups by Fernando Bale out of Hally Allen…

ALEX Verhagen has been around good greyhounds long enough to know quality bloodlines when he sees them.

And that is exactly what he has designed with a September 2018 whelped litter by Fernando Bale and Hally Allen which will go through the ring at the Ladbrokes Gold Muzzle Auction at Richmond on June 23.

“We saw the bitch advertised for sale by Paul Wheeler and thought just what exceptional bloodlines she had in her family,” said Alex.

“And, she’d been a fairly handy race bitch, winning seven and being placed nine times.”

Hally Allen (Turanza Bale-Purcell Bale by Dyna Lachlan) won at Warrnambool and Geelong during her career but it was her pedigree that excited Alex.

She is a litter sister to Allen Mike (22 wins, $105,000) and from superstar race bitch Purcell Bale (18 wins, $107,000). Purcell Bale was a multiple Group performer and a litter sister to Tomac Bale, Musquin Bale and Osbourne Bale.

Also, among her litter was Searle Bale (10 wins, $53,000) who, when mated to Fernando Bale, produced Hecton Bale (G1 Aust Cup), Mossimo Bale (G2 Cran Cup) and Lila Bale (3rd G1 Hume Cup).

The Fernando Bale-Hally Allen mating was a natural for Alex.

BUT, he had to wait to undertake the mating.

“When she first came on season, her progesterone levels were so-so and it was suggested to us that being assured of getting pups to a mating to Fernando Bale might be risking an expensive service fee,” said Alex.

“We put her to Awesome Project for that mating and got six pups. They are at breaking in now and showing us real potential.

“So, when she came back on last year, we still had the Fernando Bale semen waiting for her and this litter is the result.”

Five of the litter is entered for the Gold Muzzle Auction on June 23 and Alex will sell three of them.

“We’d like to keep two but cannot decide which ones because the litter is so even,” he said.

“In fact, they are standouts. We will probably let the buyers decide for us.”

While Hecton Bale, Mossimo Bale and Lila Bale have already determined the Fernando Bale-Hally Allen Auction pups will be much sought after, there is even more to the bloodlines than at first glimpse.

That’s because Hally Allen’s dam Purcell Bale has also produced a very good litter by Jarvis Bale. It includes Dyna Wazza (19 wins, $91,000).

Jarvis Bale, of course, is a half-brother to Chloe Allen the dam of Fernando Bale.

And, Turanza Bale, sire of Hally Allen, is also a genetic brother to Chloe Allen.

Both are by Primo Uno, have Head Honcho in their direct damline, and also trace directly to Wheeler foundation bitch Gail’s Beauty.

Close line breeding like this has been a successful recipe for success with Fernando Bale.

And, the double of Primo Uno is proving a success with Fernando Bale progeny as well.

This is how recent G2 Qld Derby winner Sennachie (2nd G1 Silver Chief) is bred.

Turanza Bale is also damsire of Group stars Matt Machine, Myrniong Corner, Apex Within, Dyna Yezza, Dyna Carnie and Dyna Weslyn.

Alex Verhagen is excited about the prospects of the Fernando Bale-Hally Allen litter.

“They are very nice types with a lot of leg under them,” he said. “We like them very much.”
