Flying Ricciardo's Stunning Megastar Onslaught

IT seems more than appropriate that Flying Ricciardo has chalked up his first group 1 victory in the Sportsbet sponsored Dapto Megastar.

IT seems only appropriate that Flying Ricciardo has chalked up his first group 1 victory in the Dapto Megastar.

Because that's exactly what he is – an out and out megastar.

If the greyhound racing world wasn't sitting up and taking notice about the bona-fide star qualities the son of Barcia Bale boasts, they certainly are now following Thursday night's brilliant display.

The $75,000-to-the-winner south coast flagship was billed as an epic battle between Simon Told Helen and Flying Ricciardo and it didn't disappoint.

Not a bit.

From box one Simon Told Helen charged through to lead with Flying Ricciardo hot on his heels heading through the first corner.

From there many would have believed the race was as good as over with Simon Told Helen well on his way to security a fifth group 1 victory.

But Flying Ricciardo had other ideas.

The Kristy Sultana-trained charge stunning Simon Told Helen off the top turn to race to the lead and a memorable group 1 triumph.

The performance can be best described as a relentless display of ruthless chasing prowess.

The winning time was 29.48 with 2 ¼ lengths between first and second. Finishing on for third was a gallant Ritza Coen another two lengths away.

The victory extended Flying Ricciardo's record to 19 pulsating wins from 23 appearances with prize money just shy of $250,000.

And it sparked a flood of emotions for owner-trainer Kristy Sultana who has been ably assisted throughout the Flying Ricciardo journey by father Sam, long regarded one of the country's premier conditioners in a training career spanning four decades.

The son of Barcia Bale and Megalodon is now expected to tackle the Group 1 Silver Chief (525m) at The Meadows which kicks off in a fortnight before returning to Sydney for an assault on the Group 1 National Derby (520m) at Wentworth Park.

On the strength of Thursday night's barnstorming Megastar win the just turned two-year-old will be a force to be reckoned with in anything he contests.

He's a special animal with the racing world at his doorstep – just as Thursday night's stunning win highlighted.
