Geary Chasing Grafton Feature Race Breakthrough

RANK outsider Supreme Stream has drawn perfectly in box eight and comes into Wednesday night's Grafton Sprinters Cup Final (450m) with much riding on his chances.

The son of Sh Avatar and Cheeky Freyer ran 25.59, the slowest of the six heats of the Cup, to give local trainer Garry Geary his first ever big race finalist.

“He's a big track dog and we have been waiting for so long for the new track at Grafton to open up,” said the Junction Hill trainer who also owns the dog.

It was Supreme Stream's ninth win in 39 starts.

“He's had trouble getting around Albion Park and Lismore even though he has won at Lismore,” Geary said.

“We took him to Maitland a while ago and he won but we've had to wait for Grafton to open up.

“He had the rails in his heat and that doesn't really suit him.

“But, the eight in the final is his box. I expect him to be out there doing his thing and if there is any trouble at all inside him, then he gets his chance.”

Geary has never had a runner in a big race final but his father Gordon, who died eight years ago, trained the winner of the July Maiden at Grafton with a dog called Kid Dorado almost 40 years ago.

“Dad was a very good trainer and had a dog called Zac Adios, by Dusty Rapid from Black Skopos, who met the great Pretty Short three times and beat him three times,” Geary added.

“Two of those wins were at Wentworth Park, the other was in a three-dog race at Grafton and he pinged straight to the front and won.”

Garry is well aware of the task facing Supreme Stream in Wednesday night's Cup final.

“It is a very close final,” he said. “Anything can win it.

“I believe More Sauce is the one to beat because I think it will probably be the early leader.

“But our bloke loves that track, is perfectly boxed, and if he can get anywhere near them early, he will be running on at the finish.”
