Group 1 Magic For True Detective

TRUE Detective has capped off a meteoric rise through the grades to record a slashing victory in Monday's Hume Cup at The Meadows.

POWERHOUSE chaser True Detective has capped off a meteoric rise through the grades to record a slashing victory in Monday night's Group 1 Hume Cup Final (600m) at The Meadows.

The Jeff Britton-trained son of Black Magic Opal was installed a warm $2.35 favourite for Monday night's $75,000 to-the-winner decider, with the jury out on how the fastest qualifier would negotiate the inside draw off the bend start.

But in what almost appeared a carbon copy of last week's heats, True Detective sprung out early to trail tearaway leader Chief Fernando heading through the first corner.

After making light work of the early stages, the race was there for True Detective's taking late in the piece, surging clear before staving off a late flurry from evergreen NSW chaser Zipping Potter.

The performance of the runner-up was out of this world for trainer Jason Magri, while third placegetter Lektra Spring ran another gallant race, something that's become a regular occurrence throughout his career.

The margins at the finish were half-a-length by 2 ¼ lengths – the winner's time 34.42.

Monday night's Hume Cup victory puts True Detective front and centre for the fast approaching Group 1 Bold Trease at Sandown Park.

Now a winner at 12 of his 18 appearances, True Detective is already a winner over the Sandown Park 715 metres, and has seemingly come along in leaps and bounds since that first up distance effort early last month.

Meanwhile, Barooga Brett capped off his preparations for Saturday night's Group 1 Topgun with a commanding victory in the Group 3 Silver Bullet.

After the race was delayed for over an hour with The Meadows the recipient of a huge electrical storm, it was Barooga Brett who prevailed in the $25,000 to-the-winner feature, running down tearaway leader Simon Told Helen in the final few bounds, posting 30.04 under heavy conditions.

Monday night's Silver Bullet was Barooga Brett's third group race win at The Meadows, boasting victories in the group 1 Temlee and Silver Chief earlier in the year.

Interestingly, Barooga Brett will exit box four in Saturday night's Topgun, the same draw he had in Monday night's Silver Bullet victory.
