Champion Stayer Scratched From Sydney Cup

ONE of the key favourites for Friday night's rich Group 3 Sydney Cup Final at Sydney's Wentworth Park has been withdrawn on race eve.

CHAMPION stayer Tornado Tears has been scratched from Friday night's Group 3 Sydney Cup Final (720m) at Wentworth Park.

The son of Fernando Bale and Tears Siam tore a pad when winning his heat last week and trainer Robbie Britton has worked overtime to get him right this week.

However, he gave up today and scratched the dog from the $100,000 to-the-winner finale.

“It is the same off side hind pad as he did at Wentworth Park some time ago,” said Robbie.

Britton suggested there must be a problem at Wentworth Park with this injury constantly cropping up.

“There just has to be a problem,” he said.

“How can a dog go away from Wentworth Park for 20 or 30 starts and not have a worry, but he goes back there and does the very same injury a year later.

“It has to be connected.”

Britton said he had faced the same problem a number of times, all with dogs running from the 720 metre start.

“I'm not taking the risk with him even though it is a final worth $100,000,” said Robbie.

“He ran so badly in a final at Wentworth Park last time after doing the injury.”

Fortunately, kennelmate Here's Tears escaped any such problem and is primed for Friday night's final.
