18 month old youngster Lochinvar Chase set tongues wagging at Richmond on Wednesday afternoon with a near record performance trial effort over the 330m for Group 1 winning trainer Robert Smith.

Stopping the clock in a remarkable 18.47 at his first look at the track, the son of Barcia Bale and Elcee Jay was just 1 1/2 lengths outside the 18.36 track record, established just last week by Caviar Quality for trainer Sam Sultana.

To give the mind-boggling performance further context, Peter Rodgers' hugely talented short-courser Guiding Light stormed over the 330m journey in a sizzling 18.45 in race 10 on Wednesday, the eighth win of her 12 start career – six of those at Richmond.
