Middle Distance Champ To Back Up In Bold Trease

JODIE and Andy Lord enjoy winning races for all their owners but admit it carries slightly extra meaning when they do so for the Dickinson family.

And it was for that reason the all-conquering kennel was elated with Cawbourne Magic's breakthrough big race victory in Thursday night's Middle Distance Championship (600m) at Dapto.

"I've had an association with Stuart (Dickinson) and the family for more than 20 years – just a wonderful family and great supporters of greyhound racing," said Andy Lord.

"They are people that do a lot for others and ask for nothing in return so to win any race for them means a lot to the kennel. They've had a bit of a lean trot recently but have some exciting young ones on the way.

"And Cawbourne Magic is ready to take it to the next level as well. He's just now hitting his straps. Last night's win shows the improvement he's made."

Cawbourne Magic landed Thursday night's $25,000-to-the-winner decider with a powerhouse 34.25 victory over Good Odds Emma and Bandit Jane making it a Lord-trained trifecta.

But there will be little time for the son of Fernando Bale to revel in victory, set to go around in the opening heat of the Group 1 Bold Trease (715m) at Sandown Park on Saturday night.

"He's as bright as a button this morning so he'll be backing up," Lord said.

"Saturday will be his first trip away and obviously going to a new track so if we can manage to run first or second and qualify he'll be a stack better for the final.

"People forget he started racing when he was 18 months old and at 2 ½ now he's really turning into a proper race dog. At home now he drags you to the car and at the track he's all business where it wasn't like that early on.

"Even in fields now he's learnt how to race where early on it was all completely new to him and he'd make mistakes."

Now a winner at 13 of his 35 starts, Cawbourne Magic has qualified for a handful of big races, including finishing third to Miss Ezmae in June's inaugural ‘The 715' at The Gardens.

And on the strength of his recent stretch of form the big-striding stayer is set to play a strong hand in a number of high level distance features in the coming months.

Starting with Saturday night's Group 1 Bold Trease heats at Sandown Park where he'll be joined on his travels to Victoria by champion kennel mate She's A Pearl.
