My Redeemer Pup Nears Townsville Record

EXCITING My Redeemer pup Excuse Me Jack went within 5/100th of the Townsville 380m track record when he blitzed a Novice field on Saturday.

MY Redeemer pup Excuse Me Jack went within 5/100ths of the Townsville 380m track record when he blitzed a Novice field early Saturday morning.

And owner-trainer Harold Hovi immediately fended off a bid to buy the My Redeemer-Fancy Dancer youngster.

Excuse Me Jack ran 21.47 to win the Novice by almost eight lengths beating Squamish and Astor to remain unbeaten in his only two race starts.

He had won his maiden in 21.70 by almost eight lengths back on April 24.

Tipsy Four holds the track record at 21.42 set back in December last year.

“I won't say what the offer for him was,” said Harold. “But at the price they are offering he is not for sale. That does not mean he cannot be bought though.”

Immediate plans for Excuse Me Jack centre on the upcoming Young Guns series at the start of June.

“He will have another run in between,” said Harold.

Hovi bought Excuse Me Jack for $8000 from breeder Dennis Barnes after the dog had been educated with good reports.

“I'd bought a dog called Excitable Jack from Dennis and he worked out good for us,” said Harold.

“So, I rang Dennis to see if he had any more coming through I could buy.

“He told me this dog had broken in with a good report and there would be improvement in him.”

The dog trialled 21.91 at his first look at the Townsville track and continued to improve quickly.

“The 21.70 he ran in his maiden didn't surprise me, but today's win in 21.47 did.”

Harold was so pleased with Excuse Me Jack that he again rang Dennis Barnes who sold him another pup off breaking in.

“And that pup is showing just as much potential as this dog.”

Harold rates him the equal, if not better than, Fanatic who he trained early in his career for Steve Williams. Fanatic has won 22 races.

Harold, 69, has been in greyhound racing for only 10 years.
