Peco's Powerhouse Breeders Classic Display

SHE came, she saw, she conquered.

Trainer Robin Grubb celebrated the biggest win of his training career when star youngster Peco Can continued her outstanding form with a powerhouse victory in Thursday night's Tasmanian Breeders Classic Final at Hobart (461m).
Making it five from five, the daughter of Fernando Bale and Sing The Song started a $1.18 favourite from box one in the $5,050 Tasbred puppy feature, and after being a fraction slow to begin, the brindle speedster mustered phenomenal speed to find the lead.
Swinging around the bend with a three-length break into the straight, Peco Can hit the accelerator, putting pay to her rivals to score by 6 ¼ lengths from a fast finishing Muppet with another Grubb-trained runner Hello Lenny holding on gamely for third in 25.74.
"I've run out of words to describe her – it was a fantastic result," said Robin Grubb.
"Hobart can be a testing track for young dogs, to win here fours run in a row is a special effort and Peco Can has really matured. To finally win a Breeders Classic is fantastic, it's been a race we've been unlucky to claim until now."
The impressive victory was Peco Can's fifth success since making her debut at Devonport in April, where she blitzed her rivals by 5 ¼ lengths, which launched her career that showed star quality when she made her Hobart debut in near record time the following start.
"I was nervous in the lead-up to Thursday because you want to make sure she was completely sound and ready to front up. I couldn't fault her, and everything went to plan," told Grubb.
Grubb praised industry body Tasracing for putting faith back into breeders with incentives for the series.
"We've always bred and raced our own stock, with a race like the Breeders Classic you receive a lot of incentives and let alone the prizemoney we've earned extra which helps with the costs of rearing litters and that gives us more joy, watching our pups race," he added.
Peco Can, who doesn't turn two until September, has already amassed over $12k in prizemoney. It was the biggest win of Grubb's training career, and while his rising star has the world at her feet, her next assignment is unclear.
"The Johnston Puppy Championship at Devonport doesn't comes up until October, so we might look at chasing her final juvenile races before they run out. Meanwhile, Hello Lenny and Hello Rhonda are eligible for the Devonport Breeders Classic so that's where they will most likely head to.
Grubb reports 2018 will be a busy time, with his next two litters showing plenty of promise, albeit only early days.
"I've got a ten-month-old litter by Magic Sprite out of Roxy Rhythm getting ready to be kennelled and broken-in and I also bred a second litter from Sing The Song by Thirty Talks which are seven months old so come Christmas it will be a busy time, but we are looking forward to them."
