Priceless Puppies A Picture Of Health

THE term priceless gets thrown around a bit but when it comes to these regally bred youngsters it may well just be spot on, writes David Brasch.

CHAMPION broodbitch Nicki Fields has whelped her third litter, this time eight dogs and two bitches to exciting young sire Aston Dee Bee.

Breeder Darren Puleio said the pups are five weeks old and “little beauties”.

He added that he had already knocked back huge offers to buy them.

“That's the last thing on my mind at the moment,” he said. “I just want to make sure they are all healthy and surviving and they are.”

Nicki Fields (Knocka Norris-Misty Fields by Droopys Kewell) won eight races and $35,000 and was a Group 1 finalist and litter-sister to racetrack star Xtreme Knocka (33 wins, $214,000).

But it has been at stud where she has excelled.

She is the dam of two litters to the racetrack, by Fernando Bale and Barcia Bale, and from those is the dam of Poke The Bear (37 wins, $487,000), Hooked On Scotch (12 wins, $346,000), Out Of Range (16 wins, $294,000), Fully Loaded (34 wins, $123,000) and True Talent (19 wins, $107,000) etc.

“I have not even thought about selling any of them at the moment,” said Darren.

“They would not be for sale until three months anyway.

“But, when they get to that age, I might be tempted to sell one dog and one bitch.

“But, I might get to then and say ‘no, I'll keep them all'.”

The mating is amazing.

It brings in a 3×2 cross of the famous littermates Elite Oriental (2nd dam of Aston Dee Bee) and Knocka Norris (sire of Nicki Fields).

But it also duplicates and balances both Black Shiraz 4×4 and Walkabout Sid 5×5.

The Fernando Bale-Nicki Fields mating, which produced Group 1 superstars Poke The Bear and Out Of Range, was also based upon huge in-breeding.

And, with Aston Dee Bee starting off his stud career with huge reports about the ability of his offspring, it augurs well for this litter as well.

Darren reports Out Of Range, now at stud in Ireland, has 25 litters whelped there. The oldest in Ireland are six months of age.

“I have just sent off the first couple of pups to be educated by him, from his first mating in Australia,” he said.

“They are out of a sister to Mepunga Blazer.
