“Remarkable” Blue Hornet Smashes Ipswich Record

SENNACHIE youngster Blue Hornet smashed his mother Champagne Sally's Ipswich track record when he ran 29.83 to win on Monday night.

SENNACHIE youngster Blue Hornet smashed his mother Champagne Sally's Ipswich track record when he ran 29.83 to win a 520m 4th-5th Grade on Monday night.

Champagne Sally had shared the record with Fernando Blaster at 29.97.

Blue Hornet flew from the rails to open up a huge early lead with a 5.36 first section.

He ran home in 11.60 to win by almost 12 lengths over Get Carter and Jimmy The Singer.

And, it was a huge “pick me up” for trainer Ray Burman who has been in hospital since last Friday with an infection.

Blue Hornet was bred and is raced and trained by Mary and Ray Burman.

It was his fifth win in a row and took his record to 11 wins from 22 starts and he will not turn two until April 14.

He had put the record writing on the wall with a 30.07 at his previous start at Ipswich last week.

He had already won the QGOLD Emerging Stayers final at Albion Park.

“We will probably head on now to the Young Guns at Ipswich in mid March,” said Mary today. “The win was a real pick me up for Ray. I expect him out of hospital on Wednesday or Thursday.

Ray has been struggling with his health in recent times and Mary admits her brother Stan has been a huge help in recent times.

“I've even had to learn how to master a whipper snipper,” she said.

While Blue Hornet is outstanding, Mary says the best of the litter, Smoking Sam, broke a hock at his second 630m start at Ipswich.

“He ran 37.10 first-up over 630 metres and then was lengths clear in the back straight the next week when he broke his hock.”
