Sandown Park Thursday Night Preview

POETRY in motion returns to Sandown Park tonight when track record holder Hooked On Scotch takes his place in race eight over the 515 metres.

Following an injury enforced five-month absence, the two-time group 1 winner returned to the track in successful fashion at Warrnambool on May 6 for trainer Jason Thompson, storming down the centre of the track for victory.

Winner at 13 of his 20 career appearances and with already five group race successes under his belt, Hooked On Scotch is largely considered the most gifted animal to grace a greyhound track since the great Brett Lee.

Boasting the Sandown Park track record at a stunning 28.94, the son of Barcia Bale's remarkable Adelaide Cup triumph last October – gunning down superstars Whiskey Riot and Sennachie – had to be seen to be believed.

And such is the freakish sprinter's star power, his appearance tonight highlights a spectacular card of racing from Sandown Park.

We see two-time group 1 winner Simon Told Helen take his place as favourite in the group 1 Harrison-Dawson, while the program also features four heats of the group 1 Sandown Cup for the stayers.

Included in the Sandown Cup line-up are the past two winners of the time-honoured staying feature, with Tornado Tears (‘18) and Rajasthan (‘19) facing off in a gripping heat four.

Eyeing a third consecutive Sandown Cup berth, champion stayer Tornado Tears is joined in Thursday's heats by younger half-brother and track record holder Here's Tears.

Winner of the group 1 Super Stayers at The Meadows in February, the son of Fernando Bale hasn't won since that night but showed he was getting back to some form with a close up third behind series favourite Mister Harlewood a fortnight ago.

Speaking of Mister Harlewood, the pre-post favourite exits box one in heat three on Thursday night for trainer Jeff Britton, tackling Zipping Truvy which makes her eagerly awaited 715 metre debut.

It's a champagne night of racing at Sandown Park on Thursday oozing quality performers left, right and centre.

The first gets underway at 6.04pm.
