It's a bumper card of racing at Sandown Park this Thursday night as we begin to zero in on the Group 1 TAB Melbourne Cup which is now just a little over three weeks away.

The clash of the night looms in race eight where Hooked On Scotch chases a seventh straight win tackling NSW star Feral Franky in the fast class event over the 515 metres.

Hooked On Scotch takes his place fresh off his scorching Geelong Cup triumph, while Feral Franky – a last start Wentworth Park winner in 29.57 – returns to Sandown on the back of last Friday's well-publicised record breaking trial at Dubbo in between races.

Early markets see Hooked On Scotch a $1.70 favourite ahead of Feral Franky at around the $2.90 mark.

It's shaping up as a gripping clash as both chasers continue their preparations to the Melbourne Cup which begins on Friday, November 22.

NOTE: Times are listed in Australian Eastern time.

SANDOWN PARK – Race 3 (7.43pm) Number 1, STEINBRENNER

Is quoted around the $1.80 mark which appears reasonable with the benefit of the inside draw. Has been going great guns over the middle distances recently but is as versatile as they come and don't see the drop back to the 515 being a major hurdle. Expect Prancing Tiger on his outside leads, with the six-time Sandown winner getting the camp on him. If he does tipping he'll be too strong late.

SANDOWN PARK – Race 6 (8.49m) Number 2, SHIMA SHINE

Makes his much anticipated Sandown debut and all things being equal, expect it's a winning one to boot. Has enjoyed a thunderous start to his career, winning nine of his 12 starts, his most recent outing a sensational second to Good Odds Harada in the Million Dollar Chase Final at Wentworth Park. Oozes class and with the draw advantage over an in-form Western Envoy, expect he continues his meteoric rise this Thursday night.

SANDOWN PARK – Race 10 (10.17pm) Number 3, SWEET AS EMM

Caught the eye finishing third in a Hume Cup heat at The Meadows on Saturday night. Is an awesome sight in full flight and with a slight question mark on the current form of race favourite Weblec Haze, the current $2.90 on offer looks attractive for ‘Emm'. She's had 20 starts at Sandown for 10 wins and her record from inside draws is quite imposing. Ready to run a big race tonight – especially if the favourite puts a foot wrong.

SANDOWN PARK – Race 11 (10.36pm) Number 3, MEPUNGA DANIEL

Couldn't have been more impressive scoring at Geelong last Friday in a best of night 29.85 – making it 3 from 3 from box eight draws. Has a superb Sandown record and has run a flying 5.01 early section. Suspect he doesn't lead Mighty Max Gone off the red but providing he balances up with clearly galloping room early, expect he finishes too strong mid-to-late stages. Gets in well grade wise and has proven himself in tougher races than this – including victory in the Group 3 St Leger at Warragul a few months back.

** LAY **: SANDOWN PARK – Race 4 (8.07pm) Number 1, BLAZING CARTIER

No doubt she can run the time to win this but at the skinny odds-on quote is worth the risk from the inside draw for mine. Does like to scout wide in her races so the concern here is that she gets cluttered up early and too far out of her ground. Not a lot of depth to this but she's getting into a very short price.

BEST VALUE: SANDOWN PARK – Race 2 (7.22pm) Number 6, SAINT DESTRUCTOR

As much as $14 is being bet about him which is fair given the tricky box six draw and the fact he has a 7 ½ length margin to turn around from last week on race favourite Roper River Jake. Rest assured this dog is going terrific and from a better draw would be very bullish about his prospects. Tackles a red-hot Roper River Jake again here but is definitely worth an each-way ticket. Regardless of tonight's result look for him over the next few starts – bursting at the seams to win another race.

BEST VALUE: SANDOWN PARK – Race 12 (11.00pm) Number 4, O'SULLIVAN

We will have to wait until the last but at around $4.20 early doors, expect a drop in class can see this talented chaser chalk up another city victory. Continues to race extremely well, especially here at Sandown, and despite a tricky box four draw, his best form has him extremely hard to beat for this. Expect he starts shorter by jump time.
