Star Is Born In Well Deserved Maiden Success

THERE is no doubt greyhound trainers are born to be a very patient lot and Llandilo's Kerry Drynan is the absolute epitome of that.

THERE is no doubt greyhound trainers are born to be a patient lot and Llandilo's Kerry Drynan is the absolute epitome of that.

Kerry landed a winning maiden double at Richmond on Wednesday afternoon with Star Is Born (Fernando Bale-Voussoir) and Makutu (My Redeemer-Magic Lace).

And while over the moon with both debut performances, it is Star Is Born which Kerry is happiest with after having to wait 11 months for the bitch to get to the races.

Star Is Born won a performance trial at Gosford way back on February 22 last year.

“I was getting her ready for the Easter Egg Magic Maiden at Wenty but she tore a back muscle in a trial there before the series,” said Kerry.

“And you know how it goes after that. We brought her back into work, it tore a bit more, we did more with her and then decided enough was enough and she went out into the paddock for a good long rest to recover.”

That rest was as a companion for her mother Voussoir.

“And she got that fat it has taken a while to get her fit enough again,” said Kerry.

“She's been in work for two months now, had four circle runs and is holding up well.

“She always showed lots of early dash when first in work, and at that time I was worried about her run home. Let's hope the maturity will add to her stamina.”

Kerry plans to keep the bitch to short course races for a while to allow her to get race fit and experience, and see if she holds up to racing.

Of Makutu, he is one of a three-pup litter, one of which died tragically at nine months of age.

“I have Makutu and his sister and when I put them into work they showed me enormous potential breaking 16 up Appin as pups,” she said.

“But one of them had a little injury and we put them aside. I really like them.”

Star Is Born ran 18.60 to win her heat of the maiden series by six lengths while Makutu won by six and a half lengths in 18.99.

Drynan heads to Wentworth Park on Saturday night represented Kurios Motion and Vamos Penny, the latter a daughter of Fernando Bale and Chica Destacada.
