Tommy Shelby Nearing His Racetrack Return

CHAMPION sprinter Tommy Shelby is near a comeback to racing and that could be as close as the WA heats of the National Sprint on August 7.

CHAMPION sprinter Tommy Shelby is nearing a comeback to racing and that could be as close as the heats of the WA National Sprint series at Cannington on August 7.

Trainer Steve Withers said the son of Fernando Bale and Serena Fly High has had the benefit of a couple of recent trials which he described as “pretty sharp”.

Tommy Shelby (29 wins, $1 million) has not raced since being injured when second to Sunset Spitfire in a Cannington FFA on May 1. It was his first start since winning the Group 1 Golden Easter Egg at Wentworth Park in April.

“He had heat in a hock ligament and while it was not harsh we made the decision to give him plenty of time to get over the problem,” Withers said.

“He is only very young having turned three in March so there is lots of racing to come for him. Injury free of course.”

Withers has the Nationals heats in the back of his mind but nothing is confirmed.

“We will be best guided by how he gallops and pulls up after his next run or two,” he said.

“There is no rush. He trialled on Thursday and in atrocious conditions he went fantastic.”

Withers has been collecting Tommy Shelby semen each week while he has been off the scene and says the response to him, without even advertising him, has been fabulous.

“We are only selling semen for bitches that are on season,” he said.

“The fee is $2750 and that includes shipment around the country.

“He has served some great bitches already including a sister to Western Envoy and our own bitch Joker Poker, a litter sister to top stayer Just Terms, which won at Wenty and went 29.70 at Cannington.

“And Ray Henness' bitch Speedy Evie who has already whelped to him could have been anything.

“There is a dozen bitches in pup to him.”
