Triple Delight For Dwyer In Bathurst MDC

ASHLEY Dwyer has been having a very good run of late, but he picked the perfect time to train his first ever trifecta at Bathurst on Monday.

ASHLEY Dwyer has been having a very good run of late, but he picked the perfect time to train his first ever trifecta, with each of the trio gaining a ticket directly into the semi-finals of the TAB Million Dollar Chase.

Dwyer's trio of Charlie's Jar, Special Blend and Joseph's Coat finished 1-2-3 in the Regional Final of the Million Dollar Chase at Bathurst on Monday afternoon, giving not only a handy collect for a few friends of the trainer who took trifectas, but the trio also move straight into the semi-finals on September 16 at Wentworth Park.

It was only two weeks ago that Special Blend, Charlie's Jar and kennelmate Royal Osti all won on the same card at Bathurst giving the trainer a rare treble, and two nights earlier Joseph's Coat won in town at Wentworth Park at $51.

Making the achievement even more remarkable, was that all four of those greyhounds were bred by Dwyer and are littermates, by Fernando Bale out of Osti Influence.

"Yeah I had the treble the other day and that's an achievement, and had a double at Wenty, but I've never had a trifecta," said Dwyer after a career stretching almost five decades in the sport. "The litter is going really well."

Like Joseph's Coat at Wentworth Park, Charlie's Jar was not favoured, starting at $41 and knocking off odds-on favourite Special Blend with $34 chance Joseph's Coat third. For the record the trifecta paid $538.

Charlie's Jar was able cross Special Blend and lead around the first corner, but the talented chaser looked as though he might be poised to run down the leader heading up the back.

But Charlie's Jar was running good sectionals in the lead and still had 2¼ lengths to spare over his kennelmate on the line winning in 29.78s, with Joseph's Coat running home well to grab third a further 4¼ lengths away.

"They are all good dogs on the bunny but he's definitely carved out sections," said Dwyer. "Going down the back I thought Special Blend would pick him up but he was just carving out too fast a time all the way through."

Dwyer said he planned to set the trio for the Bathurst leg of the series and will also look for a qualifying path for Royal Osti as well.

In the 2021 postponed MDC which was run back in April-May this year, Dwyer qualified Special Blend for the semi-finals after winning the Nowra Regional Final.

"He had no luck at all in the semis. He deserves to win a race like this," the trainer said.

The Dwyer trio will be looking to hold up a Bathurst Million Dollar Chase tradition.

Each of the four years the Million Dollar Chase has been conducted, one dog which raced in the regional series at Bathurst has made it to the Grand Final of the event.

In 2018 Sky Wave contested the Bathurst series and made the Grand Final, in 2019 it was the eventual MDC Grand Final winner Good Odds Harada who won the Bathurst Regional Final, in 2020 Flying Ricciardo won at Bathurst and made the Grand Final, then earlier this year Irinka Riley won the Bathurst event and qualified for the Grand Final.
