Western Envoy Turns The Tables In Ballarat Cup

CLASSY sprinter Western Envoy turned the tables on Melbourne Cup winner Whiskey Riot to claim a thrilling Ballarat Cup Final on Saturday night.

CLASSY sprinter Western Envoy emulated the deeds of his dam Shared Equity with a thrilling victory in Saturday night's Group 2 Ballarat Cup Final for trainer Angela Langton.

In almost a carbon copy of the Group 1 Melbourne Cup decider at Sandown a fortnight ago, it was Western Envoy and Whiskey Riot battling it out down the Ballarat straight, with Western Envoy turning the tables on Melbourne Cup hero Whiskey Riot in the narrowest of finishes.

Western Envoy, a son of Kinloch Brae and 2015 Ballarat Cup winner Shared Equity, secured his 12th race victory on Saturday night, his stake earnings soaring to the $250,000 mark thanks to the $47,000 winner's cheque.

As expected, the tearaway early leader in Saturday night's group 2 decider was Bendigo Cup heroine Crimson Vixen, setting a frantic tempo out in front.

Heading off the top turn Western Envoy began getting into his work ominously down the centre of the track, while Whiskey Riot was making his presence felt up along the fence.

At the finish just .19 of a length separated the pair … slightly more than the .09 of a length that split them in their recent Melbourne Cup clash.

Western Envoy clocked 24.85 to secure the cup ahead of a gallant Whiskey Riot. Crimson Vixen finished third just another length away.

Earlier in the program the $7,000 to-the-winner Summer Classic Final (450m) went the way of Goulburn Cup winner Emerald Rainbow for trainer Dave Geall.

The Ballarat Cup consolation was taken out by Slingshot Hammer in the last stride over Mepunga Daniel in 24.94. while Waging War was most impressive taking out the 545 metre feature for trainer Glenn Rounds in 30.52.
