Where To Next For Good Juan?

THE career of Good Juan is at the crossroads after receiving a ticket for failing to pursue the lure at Wentworth Park on Friday night.

THE career of Good Juan is at the crossroads after receiving a ticket for failing to pursue at Wentworth Park on Friday night.

The hugely talented yet enigmatic chaser contested the opening Sydney Cup heat as a raging hot $1.15 favourite against just three opponents.

But in a disastrous performance for connections and punters, Good Juan all but came to a standstill at the top turn before deciding to get mobile, giving the best part of 30 lengths start to his opposition.

At the finish the son of Barcia Bale was somehow only beaten 3 1/2 lengths behind winner Rockstar Beav, the performance leaving a bitter taste in trainer Jason Mackay's mouth.

"He deserved two tickets for that effort," said a blunt Mackay.

"He will go back to Melbourne this Saturday. I tried to move him earlier but that was as quick as they could transport him.

"To race again he needs to trial satisfactory with two other dogs and I just can't see how he'll pass.

“The dog refuses to go in trials with just a few dogs and that's what he thought was the go the other night.

“You could see he came out looked around and saw there was only a few dogs and just didn't go. It was embarrassing.”

Good Juan will return to Victoria this weekend to the kennels of Darren Fisher.

"For mine his only hope is in New Zealand in a full field over those longer distances with the finish on,” said Mackay.

“And I'm not even sure that will work for him.

"But whatever happens he can't leave here quick enough."
