Whiskey Riot Making A Splash At Stud

BREEDING expert David Brasch delves deeply into the undeniable stud credentials of his regally bred Melbourne Cup winning superstar Whiskey Riot.

WHEN premier trainer Anthony Azzopardi looks back over his training career in the far off distant future, he will pinch himself and ask if the honour board of his superstar race dogs is for real.

Whiskey Riot, the brindle son of Fernando Bale-Ready To Riot, bred to be the champion he became on the racetrack, will hold pride of place.

Group 1 Melbourne Cup and Temlee winner, a near track record 29.46 around The Meadows, runner-up in the Maturity, Adelaide Cup, Ballarat Cup and Shootout, third in the Topgun and Australian Cup … and a bank roll of $812,295 to boot.

Azzopardi knew he had something that could run when he first started trialling Whiskey Riot.

Along the way he has met the greats of recent times. Superstars like Dyna Patty, Sennachie, Feral Franky, Hooked On Scotch, Zipping Bailey, Simon Told Helen, Get It Gizmo, Neo Cleo, Flynn.

Whiskey Riot came out from these clashes with the reputation of a superstar.

When he ran a near track record 29.47 winning a heat of the Australian Cup at The Meadows, he put his name onto a pedestal as a future stud great. Everywhere he raced, Whiskey Riot went fast … VERY fast!

His pedigree cannot be faulted.

His dam Ready To Riot is one of the great producers. A litter sister to Group star Evil Punk, she won eight races and was a multiple winner at Wentworth Park and also a winner at The Meadows.

It is at stud that she has achieved legendary status.

Her litter to champion sire Barcia Bale produced Mystic Riot (12 wins, also finalist G1 Bris Cup) the winner of the inaugural running of the  Million Dollar Chase. Also in that litter is Blue Sky Riot (11 wins, $156,000, G1 Nat Futurity, G2 Richmond Oaks) and Major Riot (16 wins, $48,000, finalist G2 Bulli Gold Plate).

The litter Ready To Riot produced by Fernando Bale, includes Whiskey Riot, of course, but also Fernando's Riot (18 wins, $399,000, G1 Aust Cup, 3rd G3 Flying Amy Classic, finalist G1 Adel Cup) and Caishen (15 wins, $98,000, G2 Laun Cup, 3rd G1 Paws of Thunder) etc.

Whiskey Riot is bred on the identical Fernando Bale/Collision cross as champion Dyna Patty and G1 Perth Cup winner Trouper Monelli. He is superbly line bred 4×4 and balanced to the famous litter brothers Black Shiraz and Big Ginger Boy. And, he is in-bred and balanced to Awesome Assassin 4×3.

Whiskey Riot traces directly to Gravel Rash (his sixth dam) who was twice NSW broodbitch of the year. It is an unbroken line of quality race dogs and hugely successful producers.

So, now that Whiskey Riot has retired to stud, what broodbitches should he be mated to in a bid to make him the champion sire he will attain to be?

The fact he has champion sire Collision as his damsire is the greatest of plusses. Collision has already worked exceptionally with Where's Pedro.

That great sire can be picked up via the direct sireline in stud dogs like El Galo, Destini Fireball, El Grand Senor, Fancy Dean, Mogambo, Peter Rocket and Zulu Zeus.

Where's Pedro can be accessed in stud dogs through the damline, stud dogs like My Bro Fabio (a fabulous cross for Whiskey Riot), Allen Deed, Moreira, Nolen etc.

Collision is a half brother to Spiritual Rumble the dam of Cosmic Rumble, so bitches with Cosmic Rumble in their pedigree will be another MUST for Whiskey Riot.

Fernando Bale (sire of Whiskey Riot) has already worked exceptionally well with Cosmic Rumble to produce G1 winners West On Augie and of course that superstar litter of Poco Dorado, Blue Moon Rising, Veloce Nero and Two Times Twice.

With Collision coming in so close in Whiskey Riot's pedigree, there is also the opportunity for some intense in-breeding to him, even as close as 3×2, or at least 3×3. Collision is EVERYWHERE in pedigrees of today.

The fact Collision has done so well with the Wheeler family's famous damlines means bitches by such successful stud dogs as Barcia Bale, Dyna Tron, Dyna Villa and especially Bekim Bale should be explored as potential mates for Whiskey Riot.

Those with the famous broodbitch Gold Rush Bale up close in their pedigree are a MUST. They would recreate the Collision-Gold Rush Bale cross that produced champion Dyna Tron.

Barcia Bale has Gold Rush Bale as his second dam.

And Barcia Bale is already working exceptionally well with Fernando Bale (sire of Whiskey Riot).

Addis Boy is the sire of Whiskey Riot's second dam. He is a son of Token Prince. Bitches with a DAUGHTER of Token Prince in their pedigree can confidently be mated to Whiskey Riot. They, too, are everywhere in pedigrees.

But, Addis Boy traces directly to Little Denver. Little Denver is a litter brother to National Dingaan (Worth Doing-National Lass). National Dingaan is found in the direct damline of Magic Sprite and Oaks Road (his son Worm Burner is doing great at stud). Bitches with all these in their pedigree should be tested to Whiskey Riot.

The multiple Group 1 winner Above All is bred on the cross of Little Denver and National Dingaan.

With Big Ginger Boy as the sire of Whiskey Riot's third dam, bitches with MORE Black Shiraz in their pedigree should suit Whiskey. These can include bitches with Primo Uno and Bombastic Shiraz.

Fernando Bale's champion son Sennachie is in-bred to Primo Uno.

Sons of Bombastic Shiraz, like Fabregas, Spring Gun, Lochinvar Marlow, Nitro Burst and his son Zambora Brockie will all achieve this line breeding and balancing.

Broodbitches with outcross bloodlines also will suit Whiskey Riot, especially those with Kinloch Brae. Collision (damsire of Whiskey Riot) has linked so successfully with Kinloch Brae (G1 stars Moreira and Asa Flying Spur are two bred on this cross).

Daughters of KC And All particularly suit. That's because he carries a double of US hall of famer Dutch Bahama. Dutch Bahama is intensely in-bred to Aussie bloodlines.

Primo Uno can be reinforced with confidence. Get these via Buckle Up Wes (a special match-up for Whiskey Riot), Worm Burner, Stagger, Turanza Bale etc. It has already worked with champion Sennachie. But, so has a reinforcement of his famous “Portrait” damline.

This can be reinforced via Cosmic Chief, Meticulous, Kilty Lad and obviously any of the bitches from this line … via Shimaguni.

Gable Dodge has worked exceptionally in the US when linked to Fortress. They bring in the famous littermates Lucky Artist and Exception. Fortress is found in the pedigrees of Velocette, Knocka Norris, Aston Galilee, Boris Fields, Don't Knocka Him, David Bale, Kinloch Brae etc.

As Anthony Azzopardi says of Whiskey Riot: “His nature is absolutely brilliant. It is only dogs like him that make it to the big time. He has everything.”
