Wynburn Lethal Superb In Shane Yates Memorial

BEN Englund was the happiest man in Launceston on Monday when Wynburn Lethal defied all attempts to be beaten in the Shane Yates Memorial.

TRAINER Ben Englund was the happiest man in Launceston on Monday night when his talented sprinter, Wynburn Lethal, defied all attempts to be beaten in the final of the Shane Yates Memorial Cup (515m).

Sent out a firm $3.30 second favourite with bookmakers, it was widely expected that the daughter of Dyna Double One would lead from box five.

And that she did, showing explosive speed from the lids.

Up the back, Wynburn Lethal surrendered the lead to Fabulous Baroque before coming again late to land the $10,000 first prize right on the line by a neck in 30.20.

Dashing George got home hard to run third.

Wynburn Lethal, a daughter of Dyna Double One and Wynburn Arrow, has now won 13 races from 27 career starts.

A proud Wynyard-based Ben Englund was more than delighted with Wynburn Lethal's gutsy effort.

"I'm really pleased, she was very tenacious in her efforts," Ben Englund said.

"Of all the feature races, this is the one I wanted to win, being named in honour of Shane Yates.

"When you can get a good chaser like (Wynburn) Lethal and win the races she has is a great thrill. To have my sister Leah and her partner Matt (Carrolan) in her (ownership) with us makes it even more worthwhile."

In what is a big few weeks of racing at the Ladbrokes Racing Centre, all attention now turns to the Ladbrokes-sponsored Illingworth Classic, with heats of the $14,000 series taking place next Monday.

Englund is confirmed his star galloper will be among the nominations for the Tasbred event.

"We knew she was a handy bitch so when the shutdown on racing came upon the industry in Tassie we made the decision to send her across to Kel Greenough to gain more experience," he said.

"The results have now shown and hopefully it puts her in great shape heading towards the series next Monday."
